Cultural tour of the Val d’Anniviers

Under the leadership of Sylvie, your hiking guide, discover the Val d’Anniviers in autumn, when the magical colours provide a spectacle worthy of a painter’s palette...

As you pass from village to village on foot and by public transport, you will discover the rich heritage of Anniviers clustered around its ancient larch-wood buildings. The history of these mountain people, thought of as nomads for a long time, will no longer be a secret to you!

Our package includes

  • 1 to 4 nights in a hotel 1* in a double room
  • Full board (half board with picnic lunch or local meal, excluding drinks)
  • Transport of one item of luggage per person between each night’s accommodation
  • Post bus and/or taxi fares
  • The services of a Swiss-certified hiking guide with additional herbalism training
  • Guided tours by local people who are passionate about their village, as well as a heritage guide

2-day or 5-day trips can be arranged as you wish

This tour starts at Vissoie and heads for Fang, a little-known hamlet rich in history. The next day takes you to Grimentz to discover a number of traditions that are still very much alive ( the Maison Bourgeoisiale, the Vin du Glacier), then on to spend the night at Zinal (the village up in the mountain pastures that was a mainstay of the golden age of mountaineering). You will visit the ancient copper mines of this “mine-rich but mineral-poor valley” and see a former traditional farmhouse. Follow in the footsteps of Ella Maillart in Chandolin, one of Europe’s highest-altitude villages that is inhabited all year round. Explore the mills of St-Luc, a unique set of water-powered installations from the 16th century. Return to Vissoie on the last day to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Lords and Squires of Anniviers with its 13th-century tower

There will be 3 to 4 hours’ walking each day.

The historical routes of Anniviers

All the villages benefit from a historical route which transports the reader into the rich past of the Val d'Anniviers.

The village of Fang

In the company of Yvonne Jollien, a visit to the village of her childhood takes on the character of a treasure hunt.

Did you know?

The name “Anniviers” may derive from the seasonal migration of local inhabitants between the mountains and the lowland plains.

Etymologically, it could come from the local phrase for “a year on the tracks” or “the tracks of the year”.
